BUILDING AS A BOOK

The building as a book 2012

By exploring the church of St.Giles in Cheadle to celebrate the bi-centenery of the birth of the Victorian architect AWN Pugin, we worked with young people and their teachers to investigate the church and the community around it. Based on the concept that the story of a building can be understood in a similar way to reading a book and in order to demonstrate the complexities of different types of architecture the students created large-scale drawings of the church and old police station in Cheadle. Through filmic and light projections we exposed the visual differences between the highly decorative interior and the simplicity of the exterior elevations. Designed as a highly visually stimulating space the students responded more intensely by being immersed within the church.
